It is the number one question we get from guests planning a jet ski ride in Orlando: do I need a boating license to rent a jet ski in Florida? The short answer is no, you do not need a full boating license. But depending on your age, you may need a quick, low-cost certificate before you ride. Here is exactly how it works, in plain English.
The rule: born on or after January 1, 1988
Florida requires anyone born on or after January 1, 1988 to have a Boating Safety Education ID Card to operate a motorized boat of 10 horsepower or more. Every jet ski (personal watercraft) falls into that group.
If you were born before 1988, you do not need any boating education card to drive a rental jet ski in Florida. You will still get a full safety briefing from our crew before you ride.
Renting? A temporary certificate is all you need
Most visitors do not have a Florida Boating Safety Education ID Card, and that is fine. Florida lets renters take a short online exam and carry a temporary certificate instead. It is a short exam you can complete on your phone, and it is meant specifically for people renting boats and jet skis.
Where: online, from your phone or laptop.
Cost: $9.99 total (the exam fee plus study material access).
When to do it: before you arrive. Bring proof on your phone along with a photo ID.
Not sure which exam to take? Call us at (407) 955-1667 and we will point you to the right one.
How old do you have to be to rent a jet ski in Florida?
Florida law requires you to be at least 18 years old to rent a personal watercraft, and you will need a valid government-issued photo ID. Kids are welcome to ride along. At Luxe, passengers must be 5 or older and ride with an adult driver.
Other Florida jet ski rules worth knowing
Life jackets are required for everyone on a jet ski, and inflatable life jackets are not allowed. We provide Coast Guard approved jackets in adult and kids' sizes.
Wear the safety lanyard. If the jet ski has an engine cut-off lanyard, the driver has to attach it to their wrist or life jacket.
Daylight only. Jet skis cannot be operated from 30 minutes after sunset to 30 minutes before sunrise.
No reckless riding. Weaving through boats or jumping wakes too close to other vessels is a misdemeanor in Florida.
Never driven a jet ski before?
No experience needed. Every Luxe ride starts with a hands-on safety briefing so you know how to start, steer, slow down and re-board before you leave the dock. Most first-timers are riding confidently within a few minutes, and our crew is on the water with you.
